National Market Summary:
St. Joseph, MO Fri May 30, 2008 USDA-MO Dept of Ag Market News
Compared to last week, calves and
yearlings sold steady to 2.00 higher. Auction receipts are lighter this week in
observance of Memorial Day Holiday as Oklahoma City and Joplin were both closed
on Monday. Early this week spring storms and high winds persisted over much of
the plains states. Demand for lightweight calves and yearlings are about as good
as they have been all spring. Feeder numbers are growing tighter each week and
demand continues to increase with virtually no bargains being found at the
auction rings as many individuals, small lots and new crop calves are selling at
large and load lot levels. Feeder cattle futures have been on the rise and are
within 2.00-3.00 of all-time highs set last year in September. With the premium
for deferred live cattle and corn futures lower this week we are seeing feeder
cattle buyers in intense bidding to own numbers of feeder cattle and ignoring
high input cost of corn and transportation. There is also a good beef demand as
beef imports are light due to our low dollar and it is supportive for slaughter
cow prices. Beef cow slaughter in April was an average of 10.4 percent higher
than year ago levels. The decline in US beef cow numbers will have a significant
overtone in beef supplies in the near future. With global demand for beef, pork
and poultry increasing as populations grow and global incomes improve, US beef
exports are also increasing supporting beef prices. Boxed beef trade has been
good with the heavy numbers of slaughter cattle movement over the last several
weeks which suggest that Memorial Holiday clearance was respectable. USDA
announced this week that 24 million acres of CRP will be eligible for hay and
forage production after the primary nesting season for grass nesting birds. USDA
estimates that this will allow 18 million tons of forage available to beef and
dairy producers with the value of forage to be over $1.2 billion. In many areas
of this country this will be a benefit for ranchers and backgrounders needing
summer pasture and lowering winter hay cost for feeding cattle. This should also
be beneficial for the feeder cattle market increasing the demand for calves.
Corn planting progress report on Tuesday was at 88 percent complete, 6 percent
behind the five year average, with more rain in the forecast over the next week.
This could hinder any rise in acreage from the March estimates. This week’s
reported auction volume included 43 percent over 600 lbs and 45 percent heifers.
