National Market Summary:
St. Joseph, MO Fri May 22, 2009 USDA-MO Dept of Ag Market News
Compared to last week, feeder and
stocker cattle sold mostly steady to as much as 2.00 higher. Several markets
quoted heifers trending slightly higher than their steer mates this past week.
This is probably not due to replacement buying this late in the season, but
rather just simply tighter supplies of all classes of feeder cattle and the
closing of the gap on heifer discounts. Crowds were light in the auction markets
across the country as much-welcomed dry weather prevailed and producers were
either planting corn/soybeans or putting down their first cutting of hay.
However, trading activity did not suffer from the lack of onlookers as orders
buyers filled the gap with aggression. Nationwide, demand was equally good for
stockers and feeders but regionally there were spots where one sold better than
the other. Local demand for lightweight calves continues to be good in the
Southeast where small producers have more flexibility in their grazing
operations, while heavier feeders are the most sought after in the Plains where
commercial feedyards attempt to fill vacancy. Northern orders, from Nebraska and
Iowa, are influencing the markets farther south as auction receipts have dried
up and direct trade has slowed. Most large volume salebarns north of I-70 have
moved to a summer schedule with sales held only once or twice per month.
Marketing is also winding down in the Southern Plains with the final push coming
this past week as the last of the graze-out wheat cattle were brought to town or
contracted for immediate delivery. Livestock auctions in this area will continue
to hold weekly sales but receipts will be light and movement in general will be
sparse until double- stocked Flint Hill cattle start moving off pastures in
July. Direct fed cattle sales in the five area feeding regions were mostly
steady from 85.00-86.00 live and 135.00-137.00 in the beef. Friday’s
cattle-on-feed report continued to confirm lighter numbers with 97 percent of
the total headcount on May 1st as compared to a year ago. April placements of
feeder cattle into feedlots were 4 percent higher than last year including the
addition of more wheat cattle lasting until the end of the grazing season this
year. Fed cattle marketings were only 93 percent of the same figure in 2008.
Industry analysts were mostly on target for total cattle on feed, but were
slightly high on their expectations for placements and marketings which should
mostly offset each other as far as market impact. The weekly slaughter has been
running behind last year’s so far this spring but the weakening US dollar
should bolster exports and help to restore a normal harvest. Next week’s
cattle marketing activity is sure to be slow with early week auctions closed for
Memorial Day and many trade members taking time off. This week’s reported
auction volume had 46 percent over 600 lbs and 44 percent heifers.
