Six Candidates Run for AHA Board of Directors
The six candidates vying for three positions on the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board of Directors are David Breiner, Alma, Kan.; Paul Funk, Copperas Cove, Texas; Jimmie Johnson, Clinton, Okla.; Jack Lowderman, Macomb, Ill.; John Ridder, Callaway, Neb.; and Jay Wright, Morgan, Texas. All state presidents and secretaries are invited to the 2008 State Presidents Council meeting in conjunction with the American Royal and Annual Meeting. The State Presidents Council meeting will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1. Final details on the 2008 Council meeting will be featured in the October Hereford World.

The Fresh Market® Opens New Store
CHB LLC is proud to welcome another member to the Hereford family. The Fresh Market®, a long time CHB partner will hold the grand opening of its store in Toledo, Ohio, Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 9 a.m. The store is located at 3315 West Central Avenue, Toledo, OH 43606. CHB LLC staff members will be available Thursday to talk to customers about CHB and assist the meat department staff. On Friday, Sept. 19 customers will be able to sample CHB product and learn more about the program.

Gebhart Wins Royal 10 Scholarship
Roxane Gebhart, Claremore, Okla., is among this year’s Royal Ten scholarship winners announced Sept. 3 by the American Royal. The Royal Ten program is designed to provide an opportunity for college students to be advocates for the food and fiber industry and the American Royal. Participants each receive a $2,500 scholarship.
Gebhart is the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) vice president and is attending Oklahoma State University majoring in animal science/business with a pre-law option. She is the 20-year-old daughter of Richard and Susan Gebhart. After graduation she plans to pursue a law degree from the University of Tulsa with the goal of one day working as a lawyer or lobbyist for U.S. agriculture.
Gebhart is also active in the Oklahoma Junior Cattlemen’s Association, Oklahoma Club Calf Association and FFA. In FFA she was awarded the state beef production proficiency award. She is also a member of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, serving in the 138th Fighter Wing, Services Flight, located in Tulsa. Congratulations Roxane!
Greater Midwest Certified Hereford Feeder Calf Sale
It is not too early to make plans to consign calves to the second Greater Midwest Certified Hereford Feeder Calf Sale on Dec. 4 in Carthage, Ill. The registration deadline is Oct. 15, and the committee urges producers to enroll calves early so they will be promoted to their full advantage.
To be part of this large offering all steer and heifer calves need to be at least 50% Hereford, age verifiable, preconditioned, castrated, dehorned, weaned and bunk broke. All calves will be tagged with Hereford Verified ear tags, sorted into load sizes by weight, type and sex. The sale cost is $17 per head and all calves must be pre-conditioned under the Merial SUREHEALTH program.

National Show Information You Need to Know
Keystone International Livestock Exposition
The Keystone International Livestock Exposition (KILE) is the first stop of the National Hereford show season and the open show in Harrisburg, Pa., will be Oct. 3 with the junior show on Oct. 5. Hereford exhibitors please make sure that all cattle planning to show at KILE are registered as any entry that is pending or not registered 30 days prior to a national show will be scratched and not allowed to show.
Also if you intend to have expected progeny differences (EPDs) printed in the show program, please make sure you are a compliant and a Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR™) breeder as EPDs will not be added to any animal upon arrival in Harrisburg. We appreciate your cooperation with getting all show animals registered 30 days prior to the show and any EPD problems worked out ahead of time.
To order the official AHA show vests visit the Shop Hereford Web site. The show vests are $30 and we appreciate all exhibitors wearing the official showring attire.
All cattle must have an EID tag in order to show at a national Hereford show. Visit Hereford.org to download an order form. All tags will be ordered in increments of 10 and cattle that have tags will be scanned at the stalls and will avoid standing in long lines at the chute. Those without EID tags will be tagged when cattle are checked in and charged $3 per tag.
Western Nugget National Hereford Show
The early bird deadline for the 2008 Western Nugget Hereford Show in Reno is Oct. 15 and the final deadline is Oct. 31. There will be a new schedule this year with the open females and bulls showing Dec. 5-6 and the junior show following on Sunday, Dec. 7.

North American International Livestock Exposition
The entry deadline for the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., is Oct. 1. The junior show in Louisville will be Nov. 16 and the open show is Nov. 20. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hilton Garden Inn, just outside of Gate 4.
