Take Me Back to Tulsa; Enter Online Now

The online entry process is ready for the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) July 4-11 in Tulsa, Okla. Visit the JNHE Entry Site to enter online. To download printable entry forms visit the NJHA Web site.

Also, entry packets were mailed to all active junior members this week. If you have any questions about the online entry process, or anything relating to the JNHE, contact American Hereford Association (AHA) Youth Activities Director Amy Cowan at (816) 842-3757 or acowan@hereford.org.

Remember entry deadlines are earlier this year and no late entries will be accepted. Entry deadlines:

  • Early bird (save $20): April 24
  • Final ownership and entry deadline: May 20*

*Animals purchased in Hereford production sales after May 20 will be accepted until June 1.

This year, JNHE participants must pay $5 to participate in showmanship. All showmanship contestants must pre-enter by May 20 and pay a $5 entry fee.

The Doubletree Hotel Tulsa at Warren Place is the headquarters hotel. The room rate is $99. Call (800) 801-1317 and ask for AHA room block. The other hotel option is the Embassy Suites Hotel (918) 622-4000 or 1-800-Embassy. The room rate is $109. Please ask for reservation code JAH.

Today is Early Bird Deadline for July Hereford World

Deadlines for the July Hereford World are fast approaching. The 2009 issue is themed “Hereford Personalities.” It will contain the Hereford Handbook; Hereford Register; the basics and what’s new in marketing; and the “Who’s Who” of Hereford breeders. The early-bird advertising deadline is April 10 and the final deadline is May 8. Take this opportunity to splash your program on Hereford World readers! Hereford Bull Earns Supreme Honors at Michigan Beef Expo

SSF 954 Moler 823 ET was named the 2009 Michigan Beef Expo supreme champion bull. The March 4, 2008, son of BR Moler ET was shown by the Herman family of Edgerton, Ohio. This is the second year in a row that the Herman family has shown the supreme champion bull at the Michigan Beef Expo.


Sims Honored with OSU Animal Science
Graduate of Distinction Award

Eddie Sims, Elgin, Okla., was presented one of the 2009 Oklahoma State University (OSU) Animal Science Department’s Graduate of Distinction Awards. This award, presented annually since 1949, recognizes graduates with a bachelor’s degree in animal science from OSU who have compiled outstanding records of achievement and service, particularly in the field of animal agriculture. Eddie, owner of National Cattle Services Inc., was very active during his years at OSU prior to graduating in 1964.


New Name for MPHA

The Michigan Polled Hereford Association (MPHA) recently voted to change the name of the organization to Michigan Hereford Association.


Make Plans to Attend Annual BIF Conference

The 2009 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Annual Research Symposium and Annual Meeting will be April 30-May 3 in Sacramento, Calif. The California Cattlemen’s Association and the California Beef Cattle Improvement Association will host the event, themed “Beef Rush ’09.”

More about the event, including a tentative schedule and registration information, is now available on the BIF Web site.

Whether You Are Coming or Going,
Don’t Miss the Hereford Register

The fifth edition of the Hereford Register will be published as a special section in the July 2009 Hereford World. These “yellow pages” of Hereford breeders throughout the U.S. and Canada will include basic listings of July 2009 advertisers with a quarter-page or larger ad and July 2009 seedstock advertisers.

Hereford Register listings include: name, address, telephone, e-mail and Web site. Listings can be purchased for $50 if you are not a July advertiser meeting the aforementioned specs. Listings are organized by state, then alphabetically by ranch or farm name. Seedstock ads are added at the end of the section, available for $350 per inch per year.

The section will be printed on special paper and bound in the magazine. Reprints will be available upon request.

Calling for Hereford Photos

Hereford Publications Inc. is sponsoring a Hereford photo contest for photographers of all ages. The contest will include two categories: 1) Hereford cattle and 2) scenic. All photos must include a Hereford. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in both categories for first place.

Contestants can enter up to three photos per category. All photos become property of Hereford World and can be utilized in future issues of Hereford World or other Hereford publications.

Photos can be submitted as 5x7 or 8x10 prints. Mounting is not necessary. If photos are in digital format, please also submit them on CD or DVD. Photos may not be altered or image enhanced in any way.

Hall of Fame, Merit Nominations Due May 1

Nominations for the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame and Hereford Hall of Merit are due May 1.

The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry.

Bucket O’ Bulls Fund-raiser to Support 2009 JNHE

The Oklahoma Hereford Association has introduced a semen package fund-raiser to support the 2009 JNHE. Five lucky ticket holders will win semen packages that include 48 total units from elite Hereford bulls — two units from each of 24 bulls.

Tickets are $50 each or buy five tickets and get the sixth one free. To purchase tickets, contact any Oklahoma Hereford Association member or you can order by calling (918) 342-0327 or send an e-mail to segebhart@hotmail.com. Visa and MasterCard are accepted.
