Demand for Hereford Semen Continues to Rise
U.S. Hereford semen sales increased 8.4% in 2008, despite an overall drop in domestic semen sales for beef cattle. Sales of Hereford semen rose 39.3% in foreign countries, well above the overall increase of all breeds at 21.67%. This data was released April 28 from the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB).
NAAB reports that 48,727 units of Hereford semen were sold in the U.S. in 2008, and 95,126 units were sold to foreign markets. This entire report and those from previous years can be viewed on the NAAB’s electronic resource guide.

Hall of Fame, Merit Nominations Due Today
Nominations for the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame and Hereford Hall of Merit are due May 1.
The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry.
For more information on how to nominate deserving individuals for the 2009 induction at the AHA Annual Meeting in November, see Page 14 of the March Hereford World, or contact Mary Ellen Hummel at (816) 842-3757.
Attention JNHE Exhibitors
Thanks to everyone who has used the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) online entry system. We are in the process of verifying entries and will send confirmations when that process is completed.
The JNHE is July 4-11 in Tulsa, Okla. Visit the JNHE Web site to enter online. To download printable entry forms visit the NJHA Web site. If you have any questions about the online entry process, or anything relating to the JNHE, contact AHA Youth Activities Director Amy Cowan at (816) 842-3757 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: No "pending" entries or "applied for" entries will be accepted for the 2009 JNHE. If you took advantage of the early bird entry deadline and entered cattle with pending registrations or heifers that had not been transferred, your breeder accounts will be charged the additional entry fee. If cattle are not registered or transferred by the May 20 deadline they will not be allowed to show at JNHE. Thank you for your cooperation.
New this year, the concession stand will be serving blue plate breakfast and lunch specials all week during the JNHE, therefore the only meal ticket that will be sold prior to JNHE is the awards banquet ticket. The breakfast special is $5 and the lunch special is $7. The Expo Square food and beverage service has a list of the specials (PDF) that will be served throughout the week.
Remember the final ownership and entry deadline is May 20, but animals purchased in Hereford production sales after May 20 will be accepted until June 1. No late entries will be accepted.
This year, JNHE participants must pay $5 to participate in showmanship. All showmanship contestants must pre-enter by May 20 and pay a $5 entry fee.
