Harrell Hereford Ranch, Bruce Orvis
Honored at BIF conference
Harrell Hereford Ranch was honored with the 2009 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Seedstock Producer of the Year award and Hereford breeder Bruce Orvis was presented the Pioneer Award during the 2009 BIF Annual Meeting and Research Symposium April 30-May 2.
Harrell Hereford Ranch located near Baker City, Ore., is a diversified family operation. It incorporates six ranches, 300 registered Hereford cows, 400 black baldie commercial cows, an 800-head backgrounding feedlot and 45 Quarter Horse broodmares.
The Harrells’ operation consists of Bob Jr., his wife, Becky; daughter, Lexie; and his mother, Edna, as well as sister and brother-in-law, Beth and Wannie Mackenzie, who are also partners in the Harrell-Mackenzie Quarter Horse operation. Look for more about the Harrell program in the July Hereford World.
Bruce Orvis of Orvis Cattle Co., Farmington, Calif., is a lifelong Hereford breeder. He currently has 300 registered cows and heifers at his ranch located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Orvis markets 50 to 60 bulls annually to producers throughout California, Nevada, Oregon and Mexico. The operation also runs 300 to 500 feeders on grass each year. He served as a member of the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board of Directors from 2001-2004.
Orvis Cattle Co. has been performance testing cattle since 1952. The ranch began ultrasound testing in 1987. The operation is one of the longest-running herds in the state. Through the years Orvis Cattle Co. bulls have been recognized at shows and sales across California, including the Grand National Stock Show and the Red Bluff Bull Sale.
Congratulations to these Hereford breeders for their outstanding achievements. For more BIF highlights, visit the BIF conference Web site.

If you are not sure if you are eligible, contact Mary Ellen and she will confirm your eligibility. To nominate a state delegate to the AHA Annual Membership Meeting, Nov. 2, your reply must be postmarked by May 31.
Final JNHE Deadline is May 20
Thanks to everyone who has used the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) online entry system. We are in the process of verifying entries and will send confirmations when that process is completed.
The JNHE will be July 4-11 in Tulsa, Okla. Visit the JNHE Web site to enter online. To download printable entry forms visit the NJHA Web site. If you have any questions about the online entry process, or anything relating to the JNHE, contact AHA Youth Activities Director Amy Cowan at (816) 842-3757 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: No "pending" entries or "applied for" entries will be accepted for the 2009 JNHE. If you took advantage of the early bird entry deadline and entered cattle with pending registrations or heifers that had not been transferred, your breeder accounts will be charged the additional entry fee. If cattle are not registered or transferred by the May 20 deadline they will not be allowed to show at JNHE. Thank you for your cooperation.
New this year, the concession stand will be serving blue plate breakfast and lunch specials all week during the JNHE, therefore the only meal ticket that will be sold prior to JNHE is the awards banquet ticket. The breakfast special is $5 and the lunch special is $7. The Expo Square food and beverage service has a list of the specials (PDF) that will be served throughout the week.
Remember the final ownership and entry deadline is May 20, but animals purchased in Hereford production sales after May 20 will be accepted until June 1. No late entries will be accepted.
This year, JNHE participants must pay $5 to participate in showmanship. All showmanship contestants must pre-enter by May 20 and pay a $5 entry fee.
