Starr Selected as AHA Junior Activities Intern

Nicole Starr, Manawa, Wis., is serving as the American Hereford Association (AHA) junior activities intern this summer. Starr grew up in the Hereford breed and is a junior in animal science at Michigan State University (MSU).

In 2008 Starr completed a three-year term on the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board of directors, serving as reporter and secretary. During her tenure on the board, she was an ambassador for the Hereford breed and was very active in planning the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) and the Program for Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel (PRIDE) Convention. As a board member, she initiated the mentor program that is a popular networking opportunity for JNHE exhibitors.

"We are excited to have Nicole on board as a summer intern; her passion for the Hereford breed and knowledge of the junior program will be a huge asset to our association this summer," says Amy Cowan, AHA director of youth activities.

Starr is very active in college; she is a student employee at the MSU Purebred Beef Center representing the university at the National Western Stock Show and North American International Livestock Exposition. She is also the beef expo junior show chairperson for the MSU Block & Bridle club. In this role she is responsible for contacting judges, selling sponsorships and creating new awards. In addition to these activities, she served as an intern for the Michigan Beef Expo and was a contestant for the National Beef Ambassador Program.

JNHE Entry Update

The final JNHE ownership and entry deadline was May 20, but animals purchased in Hereford production sales after May 20, including Tennessee River Music Inc., Mead Cattle Enterprises, Texas All-Star, Combined Excellence and Touchstone, will be accepted until June 1. No other late entries will be accepted.

The JNHE will be July 4-11 in Tulsa, Okla. We are in the process of verifying entries and will send confirmations when that process is complete.

The concession stand will be serving blue plate breakfast and lunch specials all week during the JNHE, therefore the only meal ticket that will be sold prior to JNHE is the awards banquet ticket. The breakfast special is $5 and the lunch special is $7. The Expo Square food and beverage service has a list of the specials (PDF) that will be served throughout the week.

Other upcoming JNHE deadlines include:

  • June 1: Great American CHB Grill-off recipes and entries
  • June 15:
    • State Voting Delegates
    • National Illustrated Speech Contest Applications
    • Peewee Speech Contest Applications
    • Extemporaneous Speaking Contest Entries
    • Promotional Posters (if unable to attend the JNHE)
    • Scrapbooks (if unable to attend the JNHE)
