Take Me Back to Tulsa
Good luck to all exhibitors and participants at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) July 4-11 in Tulsa, Okla.
While at the show, everyone is invited to get a good picture of you and your animal(s). Just come to the backdrop near the showring and American Hereford Association (AHA) staff will gladly take your picture. You then can preview and order pictures at the Hereford Photoshop office or online at HerefordPhotoshop.com. This is your chance to preserve JNHE memories for a lifetime.
Also this year the show will be broadcast live at CIMAuctions.com Wednesday through Saturday. DVDs of the show will be available for purchase. See Hereford Photoshop staff for more information and order forms. As always, updated results from the show will be available at Hereford.org.
Ehlke, Mackenzie Photos Win Contest
Hereford enthusiasts submitted 120 photos for the Hereford photo contest sponsored by Hereford Publications Inc. A panel of three judges selected the winning entries.
Della Ehlke, Townsend, Mont., submitted the winning Hereford cattle entry and Beth Harrell Mackenzie, Baker City, Ore., was awarded first place in the scenic category.
Thanks to all who entered the contest. Photos entered became property of the Hereford World and may be used in future issues.
Pan-American Evaluation Update
The fall 2009 genetic evaluation will have a name change. It will no longer be NACE (North American Cattle Evaluation); it will be PACE (Pan-American Cattle Evaluation). The countries of Argentina, Canada, Uruguay and the U.S. have joined together to produce the first combined genetic evaluation between countries.
Breeders from the U.S. should see very little change to their numbers outside the changes that normally occur due to pedigree, individual performance or progeny performance. The model has changed slightly, but the North American parameters will be used. The intent of this evaluation is to broaden the horizons for Hereford breeders between continents.
This evaluation will link the countries and will add to the number of cattle within each genetic evaluation. PACE will expand marketing opportunities between countries and, thus, allow for more linkage as common genetics will be used throughout North and South America.

Women’s Strategic Planning Committee to Report at JNHE
The Strategic Planning Committee formed by American Hereford Women (AHW) and the National Organization of Poll-ettes (NOP) has been dedicating much time to discussing the possibility of merging the two organizations.
The committee is currently preparing a report for presentation to and discussion with the general membership at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Tulsa. The full report is planned for the “Women’s Forum on the Future” at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday July 7, or immediately following the NOP Breakfast. Members of both organizations are invited to attend both the breakfast and the forum. Please RSVP to Susan Gebhart (see contact info below) if you plan on attending. There will be no cost, but organizers would like a head count to plan for seating and hand-outs.
The committee encourages everyone to participate in the discussion regarding the potential for a combined national organization. Such an organization would be designed to affiliate with and support state level organizations of horned, polled or combined membership. While the committee members are in agreement that such an organization would be well suited to current needs, demographics and potential members, it is also understood that this process is one that depends upon consensus within the respective memberships.
The objective of the forum is to report and discuss in order to gain member input and reaction to such a proposal. A second forum is planned for Kansas City during the American Royal in order to offer an opportunity for discussion and feedback to those unable to attend in July. At that point, it is hoped the groups will be ready to collectively agree to either table or continue to pursue the idea of a combined organization.
Given the cost of postage to send a traditional mailing to the membership, the newsletter, Web-based info and e-mail updates to directors will be used to keep members informed.
