1,132 Entries at 2009 VitaFerm JNHE

July 4-11 more than 620 exhibitors from 38 states and Canada along with their families converged on the Tulsa Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla., for the 10th Annual VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). Themed “Take Me Back to Tulsa” in honor of the first-ever JNHE hosted in Tulsa, the show was a memorable learning experience for all participants. Below are some show highlights. Sims, Stream Top JNHE Showmanship Contest

Mark Sims, Elgin, Okla., was chosen champion of the senior showmanship competition July 9 at the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Tulsa, Okla. Reserve champion was Sarah Stream, Chariton, Iowa.

The other finalists were: third place – Garrett Knebel, Winimac, Ind.; fourth place – Geoff Andras, Connerville, Okla.; fifth place – Chandis Kottkamp, Clayton, Ind.; sixth place – Kari Brumley, Orovada, Nev.; seventh place – Eric Frenzen, Fullterton, Neb.; eighth place – Eric Schmidt, Gonzales, Texas; ninth place – Emilee Kottkamp, Clayton, Ind.; and 10th place – Jocelyn Butler, Republic, Mo.

In the intermediate division, Brady Jensen, Courtland, Kan., was named champion and Taryn Adcock, Assumption, Ill., was reserve.

Junior division champion was Caleigh Moyer, Lincoln, Ark., and reserve was Spencer Miller, Council Hill, Okla.

Brock Courtney, Pryor, Okla., was named champion peewee showman and Dylan Hafer, Martell, Neb., was reserve champion peewee.

New NJHA Board, Officers Elected

Andrew Albin, Newman, Ill., Kevin Ernst, Windsor, Colo., Hunter Grayson, Watkinsville, Ga., and Mallorie Phelps, Grandview, Texas, were elected new directors of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) at the Junior National Hereford Expo awards ceremony Friday night in Tulsa, Okla.

Also announced was the 2009-2010 officer team:

  • President – Kandi Knippa, Seguin, Texas
  • Vice president – Katlin Mulvaney, Opelika, Ala.
  • Communications chair – Rossie Blinson, Buies Creek, N.C.
  • Membership chair – Hannah Wine, Marshall, Va.
  • Leadership chair – Danielle Starr, Manawa, Wis.
  • Fundraising chair – Jake Metch, Bainbridge, N.Y.

Bailey Named CHB LLC Vice President of Retail Sales

Larry Bailey has been hired as the Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC vice president of retail sales. Bailey brings decades of experience in the food industry, most of which were spent with beef industry giant Swift & Co., to the table.

He will be responsible for cultivating retail sales relationships.

“We are thrilled to hire an experienced veteran with the contacts and industry relationships that Larry Bailey has,” says Craig Huffhines, AHA executive vice president. “Larry will bring a wealth of knowledge and know-how to the Certified Hereford Beef program. He has more than 25 years of experience in building beef business in the retail, food service and export trade.”

Bailey has a true understanding of all aspects of retail and wholesale sales, food service and production needs along with understanding corporate and customer goals. He started working for CHB LLC in mid-July from his home in Florida.
