The Cattle Industry Mourns the Passing of A.J. Smith

A.J. Smith Jr., longtime editor of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association’s (OCA) official publication Oklahoma Cowman, lost his fight with cancer July 25. In addition to his service to the OCA, A.J. was recognized with numerous honors and awards for his efforts and contributions to the nation’s cattle industry. He received the Oklahoma State University (OSU) Animal Science Recognition Award, OSU Animal Science Graduate of Distinction Award, Oklahoma Hereford Association Heritage Award, Oklahoma Youth Expo Show Honoree Award and Honorary Cattleman of the Year Award.

1,132 Entries at 2009 VitaFerm JNHE

July 4-11 more than 620 exhibitors and their families converged on the Tulsa Expo Square in Tulsa, Okla., for the 10th Annual VitaFerm Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). Themed “Take Me Back to Tulsa” in honor of the first-ever JNHE held in Tulsa, the show was a memorable learning experience for all participants. Below are some highlights. Kurt and Hally Ziegler, Bloomfield, Neb., were honored as the 2009 Advisors of the Year and Sarah Stream, Chariton, Iowa, was voted the Junior Herdsman of the Year.

In addition to the cattle show, juniors and adults competed in 22 skill-based contests ranging from livestock judging to team fitting, and even a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Download the Contest Winners' press release for complete results.
