Hereford Steer Wins Reserve Grand at Fort Worth

Twelve-year-old Allie Henrie, Wolfforth, Texas, exhibited her 1,320-lb. Hereford steer to the overall reserve grand champion steer title in the junior show at the Fort Worth Stock Show Feb. 4-5, beating approximately 2,600 steers. It’s the first time since 1978 that a Hereford steer has been grand or reserve overall. Henrie also earned a record $200,000 from Coors Distributing Co., Fort Worth, for the steer in the Sale of Champions Feb. 6.

The Henries purchased the September 2009 son of JCS Showtime as a 400-lb. prospect from Jay Carr of Carr Cattle Co., Sudan, Texas, and Eric Drager, of Drager Cattle Co., Texaco, N.M., who raised him.

Youth Department Seeking Summer Intern

College students who have a passion for youth and the beef industry should apply for the American Hereford Association (AHA) youth activities summer internship. Résumés are due in the AHA office by Feb. 15 and should be sent to Amy Cowan’s attention. A full position description is available at

Schmidt Awarded Snidow Award

National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) member Erick Schmidt, Gonzales, Texas, was awarded the B.C. “Bud” Snidow Award Jan. 16 during the National Western Stock Show in Denver.

The Snidow Award is sponsored by the American Hereford Women (AHW) and is given annually to a deserving NJHA member who exemplifies the qualities most admired by Snidow, including honesty, fairness, hard work, enthusiasm and dedication to the Hereford breed and its breeders.

Erick is working toward his bachelor’s degree in animal science with a minor in ag business at Texas A&M University. He plans to pursue a master’s degree and then a doctorate in reproductive physiology.

Sire Summary Now Online

The Spring 2010 Sire Summary is now online at Hard copies will be available by March 1 and can be requested by contacting American Hereford Association (AHA) staff at 816-842-3757.

The new summary includes detailed listings on sires from U.S., Canada, Uruguay and Argentina to help producers make informed buying, breeding and other management decisions. A total of 2,214 sires are listed in the summary. There are 938 proven sires, 796 young sires and 181 reference sires from the National Reference Sire Program. The balance of the sires can be found in the carcass section, which is a list of the 783 highest accuracy bulls for carcass traits.

Ward to Speak at Iowa Beef Expo

Jack Ward, AHA chief operating officer and director of breed improvement, will speak at an open forum Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines. Ward will meet with breeders at 5 p.m. in the lower level of the Gammon Barn on the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

The free event, sponsored by the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association, is open to the public and attire is come-as-you-are. Ward will update attendees on new AHA programs and also answer questions from the audience.

Extension Beef Cattle Webinars Coming Up

The eXtension Beef Cattle Clearinghouse Community of Practice will conduct hour-long webinar Feb. 25. The seminar will start at noon Central time. The topic to be of discussion will be the power of heterosis. Speakers will be Bob Weaber, University of Missouri, and Matt Spangler, University of Nebraska.
