Duysen Chosen as Junior Activities Intern

Corey Ann Duysen will serve as the American Hereford Association’s (AHA) junior activities intern this summer. Duysen grew up showing livestock and is a recent graduate of Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) agricultural communications program.

Duysen, from Porterville, Calif., was very active in the livestock industry as a youth, showing cattle, sheep and hogs. She got started helping out on her grandparents’ ranch, and remains active in the cattle industry after retaining the heifers she showed and growing her own herd. Duysen was active in the California Junior Livestock Association, and served on its board of directors.

Also involved in college, Duysen served as a chapter and National Communicators of Tomorrow officer. She worked with the New Product Development Center at OSU as a marketing communications intern. Breed Improvement Department Requests

Jack Ward, AHA chief operating officer and director of breed improvement, is requesting breeders to submit to the Association all the feed intake data they have collected. This includes steers, bulls and heifers. The Association is collecting as much data as possible to put together some discovery and validation populations for genomics.

In order to continue to move the breed forward and assure commercial cattlemen that Hereford breeders are proactive in their approach to breed improvement, the Association is collecting DNA on any animals that will be culled due to cosmetic issues such as cancer eye or prolapse.

Also, this is the final call for breeders who would like to nominate a young bull for the Nationl Reference Sire Program.

For information on these or any other breed improvement issues, contact Jack Ward at 816-842-3757 or

Hall of Fame, Merit Nominations Due May 1

Nominations for the Hereford Heritage Hall of Fame and Hereford Hall of Merit are due May 1.

The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry.

For more information on how to nominate deserving individuals for the 2010 induction at the AHA Annual Meeting in November, contact Mary Ellen Hummel at 816-842-3757.
