Kentucky Hereford Feeder Calf Sale Repeats Success

The second Kentucky Certified Hereford Influenced Sale replicated the success of the first sale that was hosted in October. On May 11 sellers earned premiums of more than $4 per hundredweight (cwt.) for heifers and about $3 per cwt. for steers compared to the weekly average price for each weight range. The 733 head of Hereford and Hereford-influenced calves were sold at the Blue Grass Stockyards South in Stanford, Ky.

Big East Champions Named

Junior exhibitors traveled to W. Springfield, Mass., on May 1 for the Big East Regional Heifer and Jackpot Show. The Hereford breed was competitive at the weekend show as the champion Hereford female was also named reserve supreme female.

Dave Sutherly, New Carlisle, Ohio, evaluated the 43 head of Hereford cattle and Dave Guyer, Robinson, Ill., judged the jackpot show. The event, hosted by the New England Hereford Association, awarded $5,000 in cash and prizes to winners.

Skye and Elliot Budney, Lebanon, Conn., exhibited the grand champion Hereford female that went on to be reserve supreme female at the event. The winning entry was 4WF Mimosa 41U by STAR Orlando Rick 544P ET.

JNHE Sponsors Needed

Thank you to everyone who has helped support the 2010 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), which will be July 4-11 in Indianapolis. The host committee is very close to meeting its financial needs to make the event special and enjoyable for all. There are still class sponsorships and show program advertisements available. Nominating Committee Substitution

Due to conflicts, Wes Hudson's chairmanship of the AHA Board of Directors nominating committee will be substituted by Lee Haygood from Canadian, Texas. State officers are encouraged to communicate with the entire committee in regard to potential board member candidates.

BIF “Gateway to Profit” Conference Deadlines Approaching

The 2010 Beef Improvement Federation’s (BIF) annual conference will be June 28-July 1 at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Conference Center in Columbia, Mo. With the theme, “Gateway to Profit,” international and U.S. industry experts will discuss leading-edge genetic advancements and offer practical solutions to adapt these technologies into any operation. First Hereford Research Foundation Fund-raiser Set for July 13

A online auction fund-raiser is scheduled for July 13. All proceeds will benefit the Hereford Research Foundation. The research foundation committee was established in 2009 to help fund research to further the Hereford breed. Please consider supporting this online event. Western Regional Set for June 20-23

Heritage Cattle Co., Buhl, Idaho, is hosting the Western Regional Junior Hereford Show June 20-23. Entries are $25 per head and must be postmarked by June 1. Visit to download the show information and an entry form.

NHW Breakfast, Membership Meeting at JNHE

National Hereford Women will host a breakfast and membership meeting during the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday July 6. The meeting will begin at 8:30. Those who are not free from "barn duties" before 8:30 are welcome to skip breakfast and drop in for the meeting.The meeting will be in the Farm Bureau building across from the fairgrounds.

Everyone is welcome - members and non-members. Casual dress - come as you are. It's all about Herefords, women in the business, and the juniors NHW supports.

HYFA to Host Golf Tournament

The Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) will host its first golf tournament with all proceeds to benefit the Foundation. Hosted in conjunction with the JNHE, the event will kickoff at 8 a.m. Tuesday, July 6 at the Rock Ridge Golf Club in Crawfordsville, Ind.

The tournament will be a four-man scramble with shotgun start and awards will be given to first through third-place teams and a Chin-up Award. There will also be Longest Drive, Longest Putt and Closest to the Pin Contests with many other fun side games as well. There will be a meal after the tournament and many door prizes will be given away.

Player entry fees will be $200 a team or $50 for a single who will be placed on a random team.

Event coordinators are currently looking for event sponsors to help offset the costs of the prizes, meal and golf fees, as well as to benefit HYFA. Sponsors will have their names and/or logos on door prizes, flags, tee boxes, golf carts and scorecards depending on the level of sponsorship.

Sullivan Supply Offers $20,000 in Scholarship Monies

Sullivan Supply is offering 20 $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors or college students 21 years old or younger. The scholarships will be awarded to individuals displaying a great passion for the livestock show industry and/or raising livestock.
