Don’t Forget Chute Scores

The American Hereford Association (AHA) is asking breeders to begin collecting data on dispositions this fall by using chute scores. There is a column on the new weaning sheet or if you have already registered your calves and have a weaning sheet, contact the AHA customer service department to request a new form with the chute score column.

If you use the online system, download the updated forms for use this fall. The information is needed to prove Herefords’ superiority in good disposition and to identify genetic differences within the breed. For more information read the “Performance Matters: Focus on Disposition” column in the August Hereford World.

Hereford Youth Out West for 2010 PRIDE Convention

Leadership development, Hereford cattle and fun highlighted the 2010 Program for Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel (PRIDE) Convention Aug. 2-4 in Boise, Idaho. More than 110 individuals from 23 states participated in the event.

Former Hereford board member from California, Celeste Settrini kicked off the conference with her message about not being afraid to be yourself and the importance of becoming an ag advocate.

Wednesday morning participants learned about the Master’s of Beef Advocacy (MBA) program sponsored by the Beef Check-off. Hereford youth were challenged to complete the MBA program by Oct. 1.

Members of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) board led a series of leadership workshops, including marketing scenerios, how to handle different personalities during a meeting, and one for state association presidents and vice presidents.

A highlight of the event was the opportunity to tour Idaho Hereford ranches. During the event participants visited Shaw Cattle Co., Caldwell; Split Butte Livestock, Minidoka; Heritage Cattle Co., Buhl; and Colyer Herefords, Bruneau.

Another highlight was the whitewater rafting trip. Teamwork and fun was enjoyed by all as 14 rafts made their way down the Payette River.

PRIDE would not be possible without the support of numerous sponsors. A big thank you goes to the ranch tour hosts along with Farm Credit Northwest, Allflex and Hereford Youth Foundation of America.

Visit the Gammon Barn during Iowa State Fair

Hereford enthusiasts are invited to visit the Gammon Barn Aug. 12-22 during the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines. Member volunteers of the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association will welcome guests to the museum from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the fair.

Named for Polled Hereford founder Warren Gammon, the barn is known as the birthplace of Polled Herefords. In 1991 it was moved to the Iowa Sate Fairgrounds, just east of the livestock pavilion. The barn serves as a museum to the breed and its leaders. The museum houses memorabilia and history, most notably the Polled Hereford Hall of Fame.

The museum is open to all visitors during the Iowa State Fair and can also be visited by special appointment by contacting Grant Seuferer at 515-979-2846 or Rande Seuferer at 515-971-5135.
