Education to be Focus of 2010 Annual Meeting
Members of the American Hereford Association (AHA) will gather in Kansas City Oct. 30 - Nov. 1 for the 2010 Annual Meeting. Hereford enthusiasts from across the U.S. will enjoy a full schedule of events and activities including educational forums, the Annual Meeting and the National Hereford Show during the American Royal.
The weekend kicks off Saturday morning at the Clubhouse on Baltimore Tudor Room with educational forums. All Hereford breeders are encouraged to attend these meetings. The forum will begin at 7:30 a.m. Topics to be included are: genomics, reproduction, advocating for agriculture, animal welfare and a panel will discuss how to strategize for the future in order to meet the needs of the commercial industry.

The Annual Membership Meeting, which is open to the public, will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at the Clubhouse on Baltimore Tudor Room in downtown Kansas City.

National Show Season Is Approaching
The American Royal National Hereford Show and Junior Show entry deadline and junior ownership deadline is Sept. 10. Visit the American Royal Web site for more information.
The Keystone International Livestock Exposition National Hereford Show is scheduled for Oct. 1 in Harrisburg, Pa. The judge will be Cody Lowderman. Visit the Keystone Web site for more information.
The North American show date is Nov. 18 in Louisville and entries are due Oct. 1. A block of rooms have been reserved at the Spring Hill Suites. Block rate is $99. Refer to American Hereford Association.
The Western Nugget National Hereford Show is Dec. 2-4. The early entry deadline is Oct. 15 and the final deadline is Oct. 30. Download the entry form and entry letter.

OWNI Tour Sept. 25
The Oregon, Washington and Northern Idaho Hereford Association (OWNI) is sponsoring a day tour of five prominent commercial cattle ranches near Ritzville, Wash., Sept. 25. Tour participants will have the opportunity to view cattle at: Harder Ranches (Bill and John), Ritzville; Jake Harder Ranch (Jake and Joan and family), Ritzville; Clinesmith Ranch (Roy and Chet), Benge; Harder River Ranch (Kyle and Curt), Hooper and Harder Hereford Ranch JV (Billy and Terri & family), Kahlotus. All told, these century ranches run approximately 8,000 head of cows.

Beef producers, industry professionals and anyone interested in beef production are invited to attend the educational seminars presented at the 2010 World Beef Expo. The seminars at this year’s Expo will cover a variety of topics on nutrition, stockmanship and cattle handling, as well as virtual tours of two beef farms. Hereford and Brahman Breeders to Host F1 Field Day
The American Brahman Breeders Association and the AHA along with their Mississippi affiliates will jointly host a field day at the Smith County Ag Complex in Raleigh, Miss., on Saturday, Sept. 25. The Field Day will start at 9 a.m. and will provide an opportunity for beef cattle producers to hear and learn of the new era version of the age old Brahman x Hereford F1 cross.
This will be the first time these two breeds have joined forces in the Magnolia State to promote the superiority of this popular cross. An outstanding program and meal are being planned.

Don’t Forget Chute Scores
The American Hereford Association (AHA) is asking breeders to begin collecting data on dispositions this fall by using chute scores. There is a column on the new weaning sheet or if you have already registered your calves and have a weaning sheet, contact the AHA customer service department to request a new form with the chute score column.
If you use the online system, download the updated forms for use this fall. The information is needed to prove Herefords’ superiority in good disposition and to identify genetic differences within the breed.
