Annual Meeting Starts This Weekend

AHA members will gather in Kansas City this weekend for the 2010 Annual Meeting. Hereford enthusiasts from across the U.S. will enjoy a full schedule of events and activities including educational forums, the Annual Meeting and the National Hereford Show during the American Royal.

The weekend kicks off Saturday morning at the Clubhouse on Baltimore Tudor Room with educational forums. All Hereford breeders are encouraged to attend these meetings. The forum will begin at 7:30 a.m. Topics to be included are: genomics, reproduction, advocating for agriculture, animal welfare and a panel will discuss how to strategize for the future in order to meet the needs of the commercial industry.

The Annual Membership Meeting, which is open to the public, will be at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at the Clubhouse on Baltimore Tudor Room in downtown Kansas City.

Ladies of the Royal Sale is Tomorrow

The Ladies of the Royal Sale is slated for Saturday, Oct. 30 starting at 5:30 p.m. The sale will feature 29 show heifer/brood cow prospects, eight Hereford steers and five embryo packages.

This sale has a reputation of presenting a really good set of show heifers and Hereford steers. With the Junior National Hereford Expo being in Kansas City next summer this would be an ideal sale to select a show prospect for it.

Show your Support of Hereford Youth At Boots and Brew II Saturday Night

The Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) invites you to celebrate Hereford youth at Boots and Brew II Saturday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Governor's Room at the American Royal Complex. HYFA will be presenting close to $25,000 in scholarships to deserving National Junior Hereford Association members and there will be exciting live and silent auctions.

Table for Eight at "The Harvest"

HYFA is excited to present "The Harvest" Aug. 19-21, 2011, at Kunde Family Estate Winery and Vineyards in Sonoma, Calif. This HYFA Fundraiser event will feature an auction of the most elite in Hereford genetics, exciting entertainment, wonderful Hereford fellowship and a weekend get away to California's Wine Country along with special guided tours of the Kunde Family Estate. Jim and Marcia Mickelson, Sonoma Mountain Herefords, will host the event and the lucky bidders will receive a front row table at the auction complete with specially labeled wine for the bidder's enjoyment. This is sure to be an unforgettable wine country experience.

"Setting Precedence"

Amanda Raithel's Setting Precedence painting has been commissioned by the National Hereford Women (NHW). The painting features a Hereford heifer being chosen supreme champion. The top bidder will take home the original artwork with proceeds benefitting the NHW and HYFA. Prints will only be available on a limited basis.

Hereford Pair Wins Supreme Champion at Grand National

Erica Bianchi, Gilroy, Calif., exhibited the Supreme Champion Cow/Calf Pair over all breeds at the Grand National Livestock Show Oct. 20-24 in San Francisco, Calif. Erica's cow is EB Missy Lulu 99 ET, a January 2007 daughter of LaGrand Reload 80P ET, with a March 2010 heifer calf at side by Grandview 7Oaks Sonora 145R.

Plan to Attend NHW Activities During Annual Meeting

There will be an NHW Board Meeting Friday, Oct. 29, from 6-8 p.m. in the Library at AHA for all current NHW directors.

On Saturday, Oct. 30, there will be an NHW general membership meeting from 8-9:30 a.m. in the Florentine Room at the Clubhouse on Baltimore. Topics of discussion will be introduction of queen candidates, election of new officers and directors, and presentation of the Outstanding Hereford Woman Award.

Then later in the day, from noon to 1 p.m. there will be an NHW Board Meeting with the newly elected directors in the Florentine Room at the Clubhouse on Baltimore.

Submit Data by Nov. 1 for Spring Analysis

All data needs to be submitted by Nov. 1 in order to be included in the next genetic evaluation. The AHA performance department requests all breeders submit cow weights and body condition scores when sending weaning weights. These weights and scores are imperative to the development of longevity and fertility genetic selection traits.

National Show Season Underway

The North American show date is Nov. 18 in Louisville. A block of rooms have been reserved at the Spring Hill Suites. Block rate is $99. Refer to American Hereford Association.

The Western Nugget National Hereford Show is Dec. 2-4. The final entry deadline is Oct. 30.

Don’t Forget Chute Scores

The American Hereford Association (AHA) is asking breeders to begin collecting data on dispositions this fall by using chute scores. There is a column on the new weaning sheet or if you have already registered your calves and have a weaning sheet, contact the AHA customer service department to request a new form with the chute score column.

If you use the online system, download the updated forms for use this fall. The information is needed to prove Herefords’ superiority in good disposition and to identify genetic differences within the breed.
