Hereford Research Fundraiser Raises $28,726

Support for Hereford research flourished during the Hereford Research Foundation BuyHereford.com auction Nov. 8. Forty-two items sold grossing $28,726.

The top-selling lot was an incredible opportunity to purchase embryos from Paul Bennett of Knoll Crest Farm, Red House, Va. Dimitri Matargas, Iron Lake Ranch, Dallas, Texas, paid $3,750 for the three embryos from KCF Miss Proficient U201 and sired by CL 1 Domino 732T.

The second high seller was a unique opportunity to hunt antelope on the Copeland Ranch in northeastern New Mexico, donated by Copeland & Sons, Nara Visa, N.M. Steve Folkman, Ixonia, Wis., purchased the hunt for $1,950.

There were many products donated by Gallagher, like the Gallagher W210 Package including weigh scale, alleyway loadbars and heavy-duty aluminum platform. This package sold for $1,500 to Jay Davis, Locust Hill Farm, Michigantown, Ind.

Bacon Crowned National Hereford Queen

Amanda Bacon, Prairie Grove, Ark., was crowned the 2011-12 National Hereford Queen during the American Royal National Hereford Show in Kansas City Oct. 30.

“Becoming the National Hereford Queen is really exciting,” Bacon says, “I am most excited about traveling all over the country and meeting all of the breeders.”

Amanda competed against six other state queens for the title. First runner-up honors went to Alecia Knapp, Waverly, Iowa. Second runner-up honors were given to Devann Gregory, Houstonia, Mo. Miss Congeniality was awarded to Sarah Katelyn Smith, Waxahachie, Texas.

Rowland Chosen 2011 Hereford Women of Year

Sue Rowland, Marysville, Kan., was honored as 2011 Hereford Women of the Year during the National Hereford Women (NHW) annual meeting Oct. 29 in Kansas City.

Sue grew up on a registered Hereford operation in Kansas showing Herefords and was an active 4-H member. She and her recently deceased husband, Jim, had a common passion — Herefords and Hereford youth. The couple’s G&R Polled Herefords was home to numerous champions throughout the years, but more importantly the couple touched hundreds of Hereford youth.

Hereford Show Awards Presented in Kansas City

Hereford exhibitors were honored for showcasing their breeding programs at national and regional shows throughout the past year during the National Hereford Show at the American Royal in Kansas City Oct. 30. The following are the winners for each of the four regions.

Hereford Christmas cards available

If you're planning to send Christmas greetings this year, consider Hereford-themed Christmas cards available through online ordering.

Information about the cards is now available on Hereford.org. Christmas card orders will be accepted and shipped through Boelte-Hall through mid-December, subject to availability. A portion of the card sales will benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America.


AHA Seeks Bulls for Circle A

To continue the heterosis research at Circle A Ranch, the performance department is seeking Hereford bulls to utilize as natural service sires. The bull must be at least 18 months old and will need to be delivered to Circle A by Dec. 1. Bulls will be turned out with cows for about 45 days in single-sire pastures. The progeny will be measured at all stages of production including harvest data on steers and possible feed intake information. Twenty to 25 bulls are needed. OXO World Traveler Scholarship deadline is Dec. 1

Hereford youth interested in attending the World Hereford Conference should apply for the OXO World Traveler Scholarship. Due Dec. 1, this scholarship enables a Hereford youth to attend the 2012 World Hereford Conference in Alberta, Canada.

Special activities and competitions for the youth are being planned July 14-18 in conjunction with Canada's Junior Bonanza Show in Olds, Alberta.

The scholarship winner will receive $4,500 cash to use toward the air, hotel and land package. Visit JrHereford.org to download an application.


Request for Blood Samples

Jack Ward, AHA director of breed improvement, requests that breeders collect blood samples on any cattle with issues such as cancer eye or prolapse. Contact Jack at 816-842-3757 or Jon Beever for more information.

Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) and Buy Hereford are new pages on Facebook promoting Hereford beef and Hereford genetics.

Like the CHB Facebook page to keep up-to-date on happenings with the CHB program. The Buy Hereford Facebook page will highlight upcoming BuyHereford.com sales, as well as Hereford production sales, Hereford events and other Hereford deadlines and announcements.
