Hereford Winners in Louisville

Mark Ebeling, Cleburne, Texas, judged the 212-head show at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 17.

Winners were:

  • Champion bull: TCF & Co., Petoskey, Mich., Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla., and Turkey Feather Ranch, Ada, Okla., with STAR TCF Lock-N-Load 300W ET.
  • Champion female: Karey Howes, Taneytown, Md., with KPH Purple Snooki 002.
  • Reserve champion bull: Lowderman Cattle Co., Macomb, Ill., and Jake Bloomberg, Berwick, Ill., with JB LCC Quagmire 506.
  • Reserve champion female: Haley Hudson, Harrison, Ark., with Churchill Lady 0230X ET.

Ask for “American Hereford Association” block. A one-night, non-refundable deposit is required at reservation time. The hotel offers a free shuttle to and from the Denver International Airport. If you wish to cancel rooms at the hotel, please contact Mary Ellen Hummel at 816-842-3757, so the rooms aren’t removed from the room block.

Note: This year there will be a $5/night fee for parking.

Stock Show Shuttles

Shuttles will run to and from the Renaissance Denver Hotel to the National Western Complex on a regular basis between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. daily. The shuttles will pick up in front of the hotel and drop off at the NWSS grounds by the horse complex on the Hill. Check the hotel lobby for a complete schedule.

Join Hereford enthusiasts in the suite

NWSS attendees will again have a chance to meet with other Hereford producers in the Hereford hospitality suite in the Yards. Sponsored by Hereford breeders, the suite will again be on the first floor of the Exchange Building. It will be a great place for breeders to discuss business transactions or just visit with old friends.

Gary Bishop Memorial Scholarship Winner Announced

Rossie Blinson, Buies Creek, N.C., was awarded the $1,000 Gary Bishop Memorial Scholarship during the Annual Meeting in Kansas City.

CHB® to be featured at The Fresh Market openings

The Fresh Market, based out of Greensboro, N.C., has confirmed several new store openings in the coming months. Each of these stores will feature Certified Hereford Beef (CHB®), and samples of the product will be distributed during the grand opening celebrations by CHB staff and ambassadors.

The opening of these stores brings the total of The Fresh Market stores featuring CHB to 96 throughout the Southeast and Midwest. If you’re in the area, check out the new stores, and of course, the great CHB!

Twins Release New Book

Seven-year-old authors Sheridan and Rianna Chaney have written their third book in the “The Chaney Twins’ Series.” This book, “Star Becomes A Mother,” is a sequel to “Little Star, Raising Our First Calf.” In this third book, the girls see Star become a mother herself, and watch as she nurtures her newborn calf that the twins named, “Starstruck.”

The story focuses on many facets of the beef industry and the good care farmers and ranchers give their animals no matter what the weather. All three books in the series are 32 pages and are full of captivating color photographs. The easy-to-read text is geared toward preschool and elementary-aged children. Lesson plans have been developed for all three books and will be available on the Pennsylvania Beef Council website.

Hereford Christmas cards available

If you're planning to send Christmas greetings this year, consider Hereford-themed Christmas cards available through online ordering.

Information about the cards is now available on Christmas card orders will be accepted and shipped through Boelte-Hall through mid-December, subject to availability. A portion of the card sales will benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America.

AHA Seeks Bulls for Circle A

To continue the heterosis research at Circle A Ranch, the performance department is seeking Hereford bulls to utilize as natural service sires. The bull must be at least 18 months old and will need to be delivered to Circle A by Dec. 1. Bulls will be turned out with cows for about 45 days in single-sire pastures. The progeny will be measured at all stages of production including harvest data on steers and possible feed intake information. Twenty to 25 bulls are needed. Request for Blood Samples

Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) and Buy Hereford are new pages on Facebook promoting Hereford beef and Hereford genetics.

Like the CHB Facebook page to keep up-to-date on happenings with the CHB program. The Buy Hereford Facebook page will highlight upcoming sales, as well as Hereford production sales, Hereford events and other Hereford deadlines and announcements.
