Mile High Night Sale Surprise HYFA Lot Keeps On Giving;
HYFA Embryo Packages to Sell on March 8

At the 2012 Mile High Night National Hereford Sale in Denver the surprise lot to benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) was purchased by David McMahon, Belle Point Ranch, Ft. Smith, Ark., for $20,000. The McMahon family has graciously donated these 20 embryos back to HYFA. We truly appreciate and thank McMahons for their generosity and support of Hereford youth.

HYFA has chosen to sell these 20 embryos in six lots on on Thursday, March 8. These are frontline genetics that would be great investments for seedstock operations across the country. The proceeds from each of these lots will be donated to HYFA as an investment in Hereford youth.

We also wish to thank the following donors for these embryos that made this special lot a reality for HYFA:

  • Sunset Ridge Herefords, Billy Martin, Cumming, Ga.
  • Mill Creek Ranch, Dave Breiner, Alma, Kan./Pied Piper Farms, Bob Moore, Hamlin, Texas
  • Jensen Bros., Kevin and Sheila Jensen, Courtland, Kan.
  • Topp Herefords, Ryan and Prairie Topp, Grace City, N.D.
  • Fawcett’s Elm Creek Ranch, Keith and Cheryl Fawcett, Ree Heights, S.D.

Once again thank you to the David McMahon family and the Hereford breeders who donated these embryos.

Sire Summary Now Online

The Spring 2012 Sire Summary is now online at

The Sire Summary includes a listing of all active sires. The summary also includes an explanation of expected progeny differences (EPDs), genetic trends, heritability estimates, trait correlations and percentile breakdown of EPDs.

AHA Releases New EPD

Thanks to Hereford breeders' commitment to the Whole Herd Total Performance Records (TPR) Program, the AHA has created a new EPD. The new trait, called mature cow weight (MCW) is designed to allow breeders to select sires that will either increase or decrease mature size of cows in the herd.

The trait was developed throughout the summer of 2011 and released in November after years of cow weight data collection. AHA Chief Operating Officer and Director of Breed Improvement Jack Ward says the EPD will relate directly to the maintenance requirements of a cow herd.

Plan to Attend BIF Research Symposium and Meeting

The 44th Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Research Symposium and annual meeting will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Houston on April 18-20. The symposium features a variety of valuable information on topics like cow size, efficiency, economically relevant traits for commercial cow-calf production, stress free cattle handling and more.

Get more information on the symposium as well as registration and hotels on the BIF website.

World Hereford Conference 2012 in Canada

It's not too early to think about attending the World Hereford Conference, hosted by our neighbors to the north, the Canadian Hereford Association. This world-wide event is held every four years and will kick off with pre-tours in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Sunday, July 8. From there the group will make its way east to Calgary for the main part of the conference that starts on Friday, July 13. During the next six days there will be tours, a day-long technical conference, the World Hereford Conference Cattle Show and Junior Show and of course, the famous Calgary Stampede. This is the 100th anniversary of the Stampede that will make this year's event even more spectacular. After a farewell barbecue dinner on Wednesday, July 18, a post-conference tour will continue going east and end in Niagara Falls on July 24.

There are many options that allow you to take in the entire 17 days or parts of the event. We will continue to give you more details on the various travel options through the next months. Deadline for registrations is May 15. To view the schedule, fees and tour options go to the World Hereford Conference website.
