New From AHA – Herd Benchmark Reports

The Herd Benchmark Report is a new herd management tool available to Whole Herd TPR participants. It is a summary of genetic trends within a herd and compared to the entire Hereford breed. It is important to know that this report reflects ONLY the animals that have contributed genetically to the herd and does not sync with the herd inventory.

This report contains expected progeny differences (EPDs) for sires and dams in the herd that have contributed progeny to the herd and are found on the bull or heifer list. The list of dams DOES NOT include purchased females that do not have a calf found on the bull or heifer list.

It also contains a list of heifers and bulls that are progeny of the herd but have not yet reached breeding age or produced progeny of their own. A chart and graph show the herd’s average EPDs over several years, if applicable. It also includes a table showing adjusted average values for phenotypic traits (weights and scanning).

The graphs depict the trends for weight, carcass, fertility and selection index trends for the herd. There are graphs displaying breed genetic trends as well as graphs comparing the herd’s genetic trends to the breed’s overall genetic trends.

At the end of the report, a table is provided showing the genetic trend for all animals and for dams only.

This report will be created for members with the release of each new set of EPDs (spring and fall) as a download that can be retrieved from a member's Enhanced Internet Account. Just click on the button in the right hand column labeled “Herd Benchmark Report.”

If you don’t have internet access or are unable to download a copy of the report for your herd, you may call the AHA at 816-842-3757 and request this report. Downloads from your internet account are available at no cost but copies that are printed and mailed from the AHA cost $10.

To set up an online account, please contact the AHA. This is a useful tool for breeders trying to build an economically efficient herd through genetic selection.

DNA Testing and GE-EPDs Explained

Is DNA testing and genomic-enhanced EPDs challenging to understand? AHA has posted two updated resources to help explain the process: a new fact sheet and video.

Also plan to attend the Educational Forum on Nov. 2 in Kansas City to learn more about DNA testing and GE-EPDs.

NHW Art Print Special

“Buy one, get one half off” is the special the National Hereford Women will be offering on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the American Royal Hereford Show in Kansas City on their Hereford art prints. NHW's prints by artist Amanda Raithel, “Setting Precedence” and “Secrets” are priced at $90 each. Get two for $135. The funds raised from NHW's Ways & Means committee projects directly benefit the many National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) contests and awards that NHW supports. Watch for this display by the Ways & Means committee Denise Billman and Paula Acheson.

Hereford Christmas Cards Available

If you’re planning to send Christmas greetings this year, consider Hereford-themed Christmas cards available through online ordering. Information about the cards are available at Hereford.org/ChristmasCards.

Christmas card orders will be accepted and shipped through Boelte-Hall through mid December, subject to availability. A portion of the card sales will benefit the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA).

Historic Hereford Prints For Sale

Show your support of Hereford youth and get a piece of history when you purchase a set of beautiful prints being offered by HYFA. The original Anxiety 4 and Silver oil-on-canvas paintings currently grace the walls of the AHA and, in an effort to preserve the authentic artwork, limited-edition canvas prints were made and sold at “The Harvest” event.

The Giclee prints generated close to $25,000, and now HYFA is offering 11x 14 prints of the historic bull and female. The prints can be purchased as a set or individually today at HerefordYouthFoundation.org. The set is $50, or each individual print is $30.

TPR Management Codes Fact Sheet Now Online

The American Hereford Association (AHA) Whole-Herd Total Performance Records (TPR) program requests breeders turn in different codes throughout the year. For example, birth codes are used to distinguish twins in a mating and weaning management codes are used to separate calves within a herd into contemporary groups based on how they were managed. A new fact sheet posted to Hereford.org summarizes the different codes produers will use throughout the year. Visit Hereford.org to download the fact sheet.

Take Care When Collecting DNA

GeneSeek Inc., Lincoln, Neb., is the new American Hereford Association (AHA) DNA lab. The switch has not been without its challenges and one of those is that the new technology, SNP based, requires a lot more DNA than the previous technology. In other words, we have had several requests that have not fully been reported because the lab will not have enough DNA for each of the tests. Assays are different for the abnormalities, parent verification, horned/polled and 50k GE-EPD.

The bottom line is the lab needs a minimum of 80 hairs with the follicles and the best place to pull is right above the switch on the tail. This technology is also very sensitive to contamination due to pour-ons and other insecticides, so please keep that in mind. If you have any questions, contact Jack Ward at 816-842-3757.

Check out the new video posted to the Hereford YouTube channel about DNA testing.

DNA testing fees and options:

  • AHA basic panel: The panel tests for parentage, tenderness (calpain) and genetic abnormalities — hypotrichosis (HY) and idiopathic epilepsy (IE) and dilutor — $30 per sample/$20 bulk rate of 50 or more.
  • GE-EPD panel: Results will be blended with EPDs — $85 per sample.
  • GE-EPD panel plus basic — $100 per sample.
  • Horned/polled test (stand-alone test): This test identifies homozygous or heterozygous polled genotypes. It does not identify the scur genes — $48 per sample.
  • Legacy animal retest: this test is for animals that have previously been tested utilizing microssatellite technology and now need to be retested using SNP — $15 per sample.

More details on DNA testing and the new lab can be found at Hereford.org (PDF).
