Watch For Release of Updated GE-EPDs

During the week of April 7, the American Hereford Association will release updated genomic-enhanced expected prorgeny differences (GE-EPDs) based on new and much stronger correlations that provide more accurate genomic predictions.

Since November, there have been more than 2,000 bulls 50K genotyped and a high percent of those are high accuracy bulls. With this additional information, Dorian Garrick and Mahdi Saatchi have re-calibrated the genomic predictions and as expected we have seen a tremendous jump in the correlations.

The AHA Board of Directors met by conference call and voted unanimously to go ahead and update the correlations as soon as possible in order to give breeders the most current information to make breeding decisions this spring.

We will send out an email and make a news post to Hereford.org when the updates are live.

The Hall of Fame honor recognizes Hereford breeders who’ve dynamically influenced the direction and advancement of the Hereford breed. Hall of Merit recipients aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and the cattle industry.

BuyHereford.com
Introduces BuyNow Option

BuyHereford.com is excited to introduce a new service to continually meet the needs of customers and clients alike: BuyHereford BuyNow.  The first BuyNow sale is now open. Now available at BuyHereford.com, BuyNow allows consignors to set their selling price. Buyers can then choose to purchase the consignment at that price — bypassing the auction setting.

Consignors follow the same entry process as with the auction service, and can choose to either sell via the traditional auction option, or through BuyNow. Consignments will be listed for a month, until the following month’s BuyNow goes live, and fees will be similar to those of the auction.

Dennis Schock, BuyHereford.com manager, says this option was created in response to the needs of consignors and buyers.

For more information about BuyHereford.com or the new BuyNow option, contact Dennis Schock, 903-815-2004.

High Accuracy Bulls Sought, Cost-Share Option Available

During the American Hereford Association (AHA) Board meeting the Board discussed its continued commitment to DNA testing more high accuracy sires. Hereford breeders who have a bull that does not have a genomic-enhanced expected progeny difference (GE-EPD), has a weaning weight accuracy of better than .50 and was born in 2001 or after, can contact Toni Shapiro at the AHA office, and the AHA will pay $40 of the fees to have the bull DNA tested.

A list of high-use Hereford sires that the Association would like tested has been generated. To see if a bull you own is on that list, contact Jack Ward, AHA chief operating officer and director of breed improvement, at jward@hereford.org or at 816-842-3757.

For more about Hereford DNA testing visit the Hereford YouTube channel or Hereford.org (PDF).
