Association updates

Just a reminder: The American Hereford Association (AHA) has approved two rule changes.

  • Rule 17A: new embryo transfer policy — For embryo transfer (ET) calves born after Jan. 1, 2014, there will no longer be an ET certificate required for registration. The new requirement for registering an ET calf will be the reporting of the recovery date of the embryo at the time of registry. ET calves will be charged an additional $15 per head over and above the normal registry rate.
  • Steers need registration papers — Starting in 2014 all steers showing at the Junior National Hereford Expo must be registered by the American Hereford Association and out of a registered sire and dam. No steer certificates will be accepted, only registration papers. The AHA will still offer traditional steer certificates for those state and regional shows not requiring a registration paper on steers at this time.

Watch For Two September Hereford World Mailings

The September Hereford World will include six sale books in addition to the September magazine. Due to the weight of all the pieces combined and the postal regulations on ride along pieces, we will have two separate mailings.

A second mailing including the Hoffman Ranch and Moss Land & Cattle sale books are polybagged and have also shipped.

GE-EPD Results Turn Around Time

If you are wanting genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) be sure to allow for plenty of time for the lab to get the results to you. Do not wait until the last minute.

The minimum turn around time at the lab is three weeks from the time they receive the sample until you can expect updated GE-EPDs. If you have already submitted a sample on the animal for another test, then it is possible that the lab can use some of the leftover sample to run the GE-EPD test.

There aren’t any guarantees there will be enough remaining sample for a successful test so it is recommended that you submit your request at least a month or more before the results are needed.

Remember that if you are putting a catalog together for a sale you need to plan well ahead so that the GE-EPDs are available at the time the information for the catalog is needed. If you wait to submit your request for GE-EPDs until you start putting your catalog together, there is no way you will have GE-EPDs for the catalog.

AHA cannot rush the GE-EPD tests through the lab for you due to the nature of the tests and technical limitations beyond our ability. Thanks for understanding.

New Heifer Mart at the National Western Stock Show

Heifer Mart is a new marketing opportunity for purebred cattle producers at the National Western Stock Show. Cattlemen can enter groups of three to five head of either heifer calves or bred yearlings. There will be a designated area in the Yards set up for the Heifer Mart where these cattle will be displayed on tie rails.

Night tie outs will also be provided. There will not be a show associated with these cattle. These females are on display with the intention of selling them by private treaty or for breeders to have an opportunity to display their breeding program as a part of their overall marketing program. For more information, contact the NWSS Livestock office at 303-299-5559.
