Herefords Top Iowa Beef Expo

The Iowa Select Hereford Sale, Feb. 13, was the high averaging breed sale at the 2014 Iowa Beef Expo. Herefords posted the high overall average of $4,615 on 63 lots and had the high bull and female average as well. The bulls averaged $4,722 on 36 bulls and the 27 female lots averaged $4,446. This is the second year in a row that Herefords have topped the Iowa Beef Expo in breed sale averages. View complete sale results on the Iowa Beef Expo website.

Bidding Opens Tomorrow for Sale

The February Sale opens tomorrow with bidding continuing until 8 p.m. EDT Feb. 25. The offering includes nine embryo packages, 34 semen packages and four Hereford bulls. For complete descriptions and photos, visit

CattleMax Offers Online Class

CattleMax is offering a free one-hour online class on using CattleMax Online to exchange information with AHA. Topics include updating TPR Inventory and registering calves. See a live demonstration of the AHA interface right from your computer and ask any questions along the way.

CattleMax customer service reps and AHA staff will be available to answer your questions. The class will be Wednesday, March 26 from 6 to 7 p.m. CDT. Register for the class.

Magazine Production Internship Deadline Feb. 25;
JNHE Ambassador Application Due March 15

The American Hereford Association (AHA) is offering several opportunities this summer for college students hoping to further their education and gain valuable real-world experience working with a breed association.

A new internship available this year is a production coordinator position working with the magazine staff. Youth can also apply for the Junior National Hereford Expo ambassador positions. Log on to for details and how to apply.

April Hereford World Deadline is Feb. 25

Records Department March 1 Deadlines

  • March 1 is the final date to nominate sires for spring breeding in the National Reference Sire Program.
  • March 1 is the deadline to complete and return spring herd inventories without an additional $2 per head surcharge on every female maintained on the spring inventory.

Scholarship Applications due April 1

April 1 is the deadline to submit applications for scholarships and awards given during the Junior National Hereford Expo. Apply online at

Sullivan Supply/Stock Show University Scholarship Applications due March 15

Sullivan Supply and Stock Show U are offering 20 Scholarships worth $1,000 to youth involved in the livestock industry. Application deadline is March 15. Apply on Sullivan Supply’s website. Winners will be announced on April 15.

GE-EPD Results Update

If you want genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) be sure to allow for plenty of time for the lab to get the results to you. Do not wait until the last minute. It takes a minimum of SIX weeks to get results after the lab acknowledges the sample, not when it arrives at GeneSeek.

Junior AI Program Discontinued

The Junior AI Program has been discontinued, but those offspring born from program semen will still be eligible to show at the 2014 and 2015 Junior National Hereford Expos.

AHA Announces Spring 2014 EPDs

AHA has released the updated EPDs for spring 2014. Producers can visit to look up the new EPDs and download updated Trends, Traits and Distributions reports.
