Scholarship Applications due April 1
April 1 is the deadline to submit applications for scholarships and awards given during the Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE). Apply online at JrHereford.org.
New this year is the HYFA Bluegrass and Buckeye Hereford Youth Foundation of America Scholarship. The Kentucky and Ohio Hereford Associations along with The Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) are presenting a scholarship to provide recognition for an outstanding member of the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA). Its purpose is to encourage individual and cooperative effort, enthusiasm, excellence, leadership, academic success and achievement among youth and to develop successful individuals as good leaders for both the Hereford breed and the beef industry. This scholarship is made possible by excess funds from the 2006 Junior National Hereford Expo held in Louisville, Ky., and hosted by the Ohio and Kentucky Hereford Associations.

Attention Juniors: Make sure your membership is current
Be sure your NJHA membership is current, as all active members will be receiving the JNHE entry packet around April 1. The early bird deadline for entries is May 1 and the final ownership deadline is June 1.
American Hereford Association Seeks Additional Summer Intern
The AHA is seeking a college student interested in developing skills in the area of breed improvement in a beef breed association. The intern will assist with event planning, data analysis and breed preservation.
The intern’s major responsibilities will be to assist the AHA staff in compiling and analyzing data associated with breed improvement tools for the 2014 Hereford Genetic Summit in September. In addition, the student will be involved in planning the event and helping with tasks that will include securing speakers and working with them for travel, compensation and hotel accommodations.
This student will also work with AHA staff to develop videos and power point presentations that will be used at the summit and made available for other AHA teaching activities. The applicant will also work with staff to properly preserve pictures and information in the AHA library.
- Individual must be a self-starter with organization skills to assist with this important AHA event.
- Applicant must be able to work in a team environment as they will be required to work with various AHA staff members in various departments.
- Applicant must be familiar with breed improvement tools and knowledge of seedstock industry.
- Applicant must be familiar with various computer programs including PowerPoint and Excel.

Hoge Honored with Reception, Endowed Scholarship
Dan Hoge, ag professor and livestock judging coach at Black Hawk College East Campus, will be inducted into the Black Hawk College East Foundation’s Wall of Fame at a special ceremony on April 4 at Jumer’s Casino and Hotel in Rock Island, Ill. The reception is open to the public provided reservations (along with payment) are made by March 24.
Hoge’s commitment to developing future leaders in the livestock industry is immeasurable. As a nationally known livestock judge, coach and educator, his experience and commitment to teaching, as well as his dedication to the livestock industry, make him one of the most respected leaders in his field.
To recognize his impact on the livestock judging program, the Foundation is establishing an endowed scholarship in his name which will provide financial assistance to livestock judging students for many years to come. The Dan Hoge Livestock Judging Scholarship will be invested with only the interest earnings to be used to fund scholarships for livestock judging team students for generations to come.

BQA Certification offer for Beef Producers
Are you doing your part for the beef industry by earning your BQA certification? For a second year, your checkoff-funded Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program is giving you the chance to become certified for free thanks to a partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. and the Beef Cattle Institute housed at Kansas State University. The cost of BQA certification is normally $25 to $50; however, from Feb. 3, through April 15, 2014, Boehringer Ingelheim will defray the cost of the certification or recertification, making it free. Plan to attend BIF Symposium and Convention
The 2014 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Research Symposium and Convention is set for June 18-21 in Lincoln, Neb. For nearly 50 years BIF has hosted its annual research symposium and convention. The convention serves to facilitate discussion and provide education on current issues facing the beef industry.

GE-EPD Results Update
If you want genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) be sure to allow for plenty of time for the lab to get the results to you. Do not wait until the last minute. It takes a minimum of SIX weeks to get results after the lab acknowledges the sample, not when it arrives at GeneSeek.
