Shock & Awe Named Supreme Hereford; Champions Selected at 2011 National Western Hereford Show

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­– Hereford excitement abounded from the Yards to the Hill at the National Western Stock Show Jan. 12-15 in Denver. A total of 645 Herefords were exhibited throughout the three-day event. There were 339 head in the open show, 94 in the junior show, 31 pens of bulls, 13 heifer pens and eight carloads.

Star Lake, Colyer Take Top Honors in Hereford Yard Show

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­— Star Lake Cattle Ranch, Skiatook, Okla., reigned victorious in the Hereford carload show capturing win number 12 and the coveted bronze trophy at the 2011 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver Jan. 14. Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, topped the pen of three bull show and Baumgarten Cattle Co., Belfield, N.D., won the pen of three female show in the Denver Yards.

Hereford Youth Awarded $26,250 in Scholarships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­— National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members were awarded more than $26,000 in scholarships from the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) Oct. 30, during HYFA’s Boots and Brew II fundraiser in Kansas City.

Study Shows $30 Hereford Heterosis Advantage

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Calves sired by Hereford bulls have a $30 per head documented advantage in feedlot profitability and 7% advantage in fertility when compared to Angus-sired calves, according to a recent research study.

This advantage was documented during a three-year, real-world commercial heterosis project comparing progeny by Hereford and Angus bulls when crossed on Angus-based cows. The study also documented a maternal advantage of 7% higher pregnancy rate when comparing the Hereford-sired females to Angus-sired females.

Spring Hereford EPDs Online; AHA Announces Spring Gold TPR Breeders

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­ The Spring 2011 Hereford expected progeny differences (EPDs) are now online. Producers can visit to search the new data. Updated Trends, Trait Leaders and Distributions are also posted.
Eighty-eight dedicated Hereford breeders achieved Gold TPRTM (Total Performance Records) status for spring 2011, according to the American Hereford Association (AHA).

National Hereford Feedout Tests Hereford Efficiency

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­—In 2010, 465 cattle were fed through the National Hereford Feedout. Divided into a winter test and a spring test, the National Hereford Feedout has been testing cattle for six years.

Ball, Keilty Families Contribute $100,000 to Hereford Youth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Ed and Virginia Ball Foundation donated $50,000 to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA), and their daughter Nancy and her husband, Tim Keilty, have matched the donation in honor of the Balls to create a total contribution of $100,000.

Ironman, Remetee Top Louisville National Hereford Show

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­– WCC WOF Ironman U302 won the champion bull honors and JB Remetee 213 topped the female show at the National American International Livestock Exposition Thursday, Nov. 18, in Louisville.

Hoffman/W4 Donates Embryo Package to Benefit Hereford Youth

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For the first time ever, the 2010 Foundation Female that will sell as Lot 1 in the Mile High Night Sale, Jan. 14 during the National Western Stock Show, will be offered as an embryo package. Forty grade 1 embryos from Hoffman Ranch LLC and Hoffman/W4 LLC’s elite donor program will be offered for sale. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) $5 million capital endowment campaign.

Marvin D. Berry, Tom Dashiell and George Ochsner were inducted into the Hereford Hall of Fame Nov. 2, 2010, in Kansas City during the American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting.
