Bolin Hired as Hereford Junior Activities Intern, Hanson Serving as Marketing Intern

Luke Bolin, Fayetteville, Ark., has been selected as the 2013 American Hereford Association (AHA) junior activities intern. Jaime Hanson, Comfrey, Minn., has been selected as the 2013 marketing and communications intern.

Luke is a senior at the University of Arkansas majoring in agricultural communications. He grew up showing Shorthorns and served on the junior board for the American Shorthorn Association. But, he was the operations assistant ambassador at the 2012 Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE), and enjoyed Hereford people so much he wanted to come back.

GE-EPD update

On April 9, 2013, the American Hereford Association (AHA) released new genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs) based on new correlations updated because of the addition of more than 2,000 animals with 50K genotypes.

These new correlations made several non-parent animals change substantially in various traits. These changes caused some conversation within the industry because these differences were even outside potential changes from the inclusion of phenotypes into National Cattle Evaluation (NCE).

AHA Announces 2012 Dams, Sires of Distinction

For 2012, 2,469 Hereford cows from 729 Hereford performance herds in 42 states earned the honor of being named a Dam of Distinction by the American Hereford Association (AHA). The number of dams qualifying for this prestigious honor jumped 184 head since last year.

Denver Champions Selected

Hereford excitement abounded from the Yards to the Hill at the National Western Stock Show Jan. 17-19 in Denver. A total of 731 Herefords were exhibited throughout the three-day event. There was 390 head in the open show, 126 in the junior show, 39 pens of bulls, 16 heifer pens and five carloads.

Clanton Hired as National Shows Coordinator and Junior Activities Assistant

Bailey Clanton, Bucyrus, Kan., has been hired as the new American Hereford Association (AHA) national shows coordinator and junior activities assistant. Clanton graduated from Kansas State University in May 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture economics and served as AHA’s junior activities intern this past summer and fall.

Hereford Hall of Fame, Merit Inductees Honored

Hereford breeders Lilla Bell, Jackie Davis, the Douthit family and Gene Wiese were inducted into the American Hereford Association (AHA) Hall of Fame on Nov. 3 during the AHA Annual Meeting in Kansas City, Mo. Also during the meeting former Hereford executives, H.H. “Hop” Dickenson and T.D. “Dusty” Rich were inducted into the Hall of Merit.

Champions Named during American Royal Hereford Show

BPH 262 Chism 515Y and C&M New Mexico Lady 2008 won the grand champion bull and female titles at the 2012 American Royal National Hereford Show Nov. 4, in Kansas City, Mo.

CHB LLC experiences record growth in 2012

Fiscal year 2012 was excellent for Certified Hereford Beef (CHB) LLC, despite a challenging economy. CHB LLC posted a record year in volume at 47 million lb. sold – a 17.5% increase, and 2 million lb. higher than the previous record of 45 million lb.

Beef Industry Resurgence: Hereford Registrations, Cow Herd Inventories, Sale Averages Increase During FY 2012

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Despite back-to-back years of drought and escalating costs in the beef industry, the Hereford breed is making a mighty resurgence. Hereford registrations were up more than 8% during the 2012 American Hereford Association (AHA) fiscal year that ended Aug. 31. Registered cow herd inventories are up 3% compared to the previous year — with more than 101,000 females reported this fiscal year.

Youth Enjoy Opportunity to Learn About Genomic Tools, Genetic Improvement at Conference

An educational conference for youth on genomic and genetic improvement tools was held June 23-26 in Nebraska. The conference was titled the Young Leaders Conference at the 2012 National Program for Genetic Improvement of Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle and the Weight Trait Project, and it was designed for young beef industry leaders. Two representatives from the Hereford breed –Lauren Schiermiester, Buffalo, Wyo., and Bridget Beran, Claflin, Kan. – were invited to attend.
